Tigers and Valleycats split doubleheader

The Connecticut Tigers won a 2-1 pitcher’s duel in game one of Saturday’s doubleheader, but dropped the second game 3-1 to the Tri-City Valleycats.

Rayni Guichardo earned the win in game one of the doubleheader.

Tri-City opening the scoring in the fifth inning of game one, when Enrique Hernandez laced an RBI double to left field to score Ben Orloff from first base.

Connecticut answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame.

Julio Rodriguez led the inning off with a single up the middle.  Les Smith followed with sharply hit ground ball that glanced off the second baseman’s glove and rolled into right field.  Rodriguez advanced to third on the play and Smith moved up to second after Tri-City right fielder Adam Bailey tried to throw Rodriguez out at third.  Brett Anderson followed with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Rodriguez and advanced Smith to third.

The next batter, Chao-Ting Tang, gave the Tigers the lead with a sacrifice fly to left field.  Tri-City left fielder Wilton Infante had a chance to throw Smith out at the plate, but his throw sailed over catcher Ben Heath’s head and hit the netting above the backstop behind home plate.

Ryan Enos had two hits in game two.

The two fifth inning runs were all the Tigers pitchers would need, as Rayni Guichardo cruised to victory, allowing only one run in six innings of work and Tyler White pitched a perfect seventh inning to earn his second save of the season.

The Tigers pitching staff was less successful in game two, as spot starter Miguel Mejia allowed two earned runs in three innings and reliever Drew Gagnier allowed one run in two innings.

The Tigers’ only run came in the fourth inning when Ryan Enos scored on James Robbins double.  Enos finished the game with two hits and a walk in three trips to the plate.

The Tigers and Valleycats will lock horns again with a game beginning at 1:05 p.m. on Sunday at Dodd Stadium.  Josue Carreno (2-4, 4.97) is scheduled to start on the mound for the Tigers.
