Soares sparks comeback

The Connecticut Tigers used a combination of long ball and small ball to defeat the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 5-4 in a come-from-behind extra innings victory Tuesday.

Connecticut Tigers starting pitcher Josue Carreno allowed 2 earned runs in 5 innings

Ryan Soares sparked an eighth inning comeback, leading off the inning with a home run to left field that cut the Tigers’ deficit to one run.  P.J. Polk followed with a single and a stolen base, putting himself in scoring position for Alexander Nunez.  Nunez laid down a bunt that was fielded by pitcher Gregorio Rosario.  Rosario looked toward third base then spun around toward first only to realize his hesitation had cost him a chance to throw out the speedy Nunez, who was credited with a single.  Rosario was then replaced by relief pitcher James Ehlert, who allowed the tying run to score when Matt Perry grounded into a fielder’s choice.

The Tigers would score the game-winning run two innings later when Soares crossed the plate after a single up the middle by Julio Rodriguez.

Tigers starting pitcher Josue Carreno did not have his best outing of the season, but he battled through five innings and gave the Tigers a chance to win the game.  He finished with a final line of 5.0 innings pitched, two earned runs, five hits, three walks and four strikeouts.

Relief pitcher Michael Torrealba continued his domination of the New York-Penn League, pitching three shutout innings and allowing only one Scrapper to reach base.  Eight of the nine outs recorded while he was on the mound were strikeouts, many of which came on his sharp slider.

Logan Hoch pitched scoreless ninth and tenth innings and earned the win.

Nunez had a big day offensively, going 4-5 with a triple and a run scored.  Soares, Rodriguez and James Robbins also had multi-hit games.

The win improved the Tigers’ record to 11-8, which puts them 3.5 games behind the Vermont Lake Monsters in the Stedler Division.  They have a rare off day tomorrow.  Then they will head to Batavia for the first game of a six-game road trip.
