Tigers fall to Lake Monsters, split series

The Connecticut Tigers fell to the Vermont Lake Monsters 7-3 Sunday in front of 1,613 fans at Dodd Stadium.

Bristol native Brett Anderson homered in the 6th inning

Tigers starting pitcher Lance Baxter pitched two scoreless innings to begin the game, but ran into trouble in the third, walking Chad Mozingo after striking out Connor Rowe to begin the inning.  Mozingo advanced to second after an errant pickoff throw, then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Hendry Jimenez.  Jason Martinson followed with a walk to bring up the Lake Monsters cleanup hitter, David Freitas, with one out and runners on first and third.  Freitas singled to right field to score Mozingo and Ronnie Labrie and Justin Miller followed with RBI singles to increase the Lake Monsters lead to 3-0.  Baxter then struck out Marcus Jones to end the inning.

Relief pitcher Patrick Lawson replaced Baxter in the fourth inning, but he struggled as well, allowing three runs on three hits and a walk as the Lake Monsters lead swelled to 6-0.

The Tigers offense responded in the sixth inning when Brett Anderson hit a three-run home run over the left field wall, scoring James Robbins and Ryan Enos, who had each singled to reach base in front of Anderson.

Relief pitcher Tyler Clark allowed 1 run in 3 innings of work

The Lake Monsters added one more run in the eighth inning when Connor Rowe hit an RBI single off of Tigers pitcher Tyler Clark.

Baxter earned the loss, falling to 0-2 on the season after allowing three earned runs in three innings of work.  His fastball sat between 84 and 87 miles per hour and had good movement, but it was not enough to keep the Lake Monsters hitters off the bases.

Tigers outfielder P.J. Polk played in his first game since June 21, when he injured his hamstring running out a ground ball.  Polk looked like he was running with a slight limp after grounding out in his first at bat, but he stayed in the game and seemed to improve as the game went on.

The Tigers will be back in action at Dodd Stadium on Monday at 7:05 p.m. against the Lowell Spinners.  Clemente Mendoza (0-1, 3.86) is expected to get the start for the Tigers.  He will be opposed by the hard-throwing Roman Mendez (1-1, 4.50), who earned the win in his last start against the Tigers on June 23.
