Tigers to host Lake Monsters in home opener

The Connecticut Tigers will play their first-ever game at Dodd Stadium Saturday at 7:05 p.m. against the Vermont Lake Monsters.  They enter their home opener with a 4-4 record after finishing their season-opening road trip with an 8-7 win over the Lowell Spinners on Friday.

Right-handed pitcher Josue Carreno will have the honor of starting the Tigers’ home-opener on his 19th birthday.  Carreno, a graduate of the Tigers’ Venezuelan Summer League program, pitched three strong innings in his first outing, before falling apart in the fourth against this same Lake Monsters team.

Bobby Hansen will get the start for the Lake Monsters, a Washington Nationals affiliate.  Hansen pitched four shutout innings against the Tigers in his first start of the season on June 22.

Offensively, the Tigers have received strong contributions from center fielder Jeff Rowland, who has set the table from the leadoff spot with a .432 on-base percentage.  Ryan Enos’ nine runs batted in and 13 total bases lead the team.

First baseman James Robbins is perhaps the most highly-touted prospect on the team, ranking 29th on Baseball America’s preseason list of Tigers prospects.  He is off to a slow start, hitting .226 with only one extra base hit.

Infielder Blake Kelso leads the Lake Monsters in several offensive categories, including hits, batting average and OPS.
