Monsters beat Tigers 5-3

The Connecticut Tigers fell to the Vermont Lake Monsters 5-3 Monday night at Centennial Field in Burlington, Vt.

Vermont starting pitcher Graham Hicks baffled Tigers hitters for the game’s first five innings, recording eight strikeouts and allowing one earned run.

A solo home run off the bat of Matt Mansilla gave the Tigers an early 1-0 lead in the second inning.  The Tigers tacked on two more in the fourth after a pair of Vermont errors and a Josh Ashenbrenner double.

Tigers starting pitcher Josue Carreno cruised through the first three innings, before struggling with his command in the bott0m of the fourth, surrendering three walks and five runs in the inning.

The Tigers bullpen pitched well in the losing effort, as Michael Torrealba, Tyler Clark, Brennan Smith and Drew Gagnier combined to pitch 4.2 shutout innings in relief of Carreno.

The Tigers wrap up their brief two-game series with Vermont Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.  Lance Baxter is expected to start for the Tigers.  He will be opposed by Bobby Hansen.
