Tigers lose opener 4-3

The Connecticut Tigers fell 4-3 to the Tri-City Valleycats in Friday’s season opener.

Starting pitcher Clemente Mendoza managed to turn in a quality start, despite allowing nine hits in six innings of work.  Mendoza gave way to relief pitcher Michael Torrealba, who was saddled with the loss after giving up a walk-off RBI double to Oscar Figueroa in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Designated hitter Ryan Enos led the Tigers offense, going two for four with two doubles and two RBI.

Swings and misses were the theme of the night for Tigers hitters, who were struck out 15 times by Valleycats pitchers.  Jeff Rowland, P.J. Polk and Alexander Nunez struck out three times apiece.

Right-handed pitcher Luis Sanz is expected to start Saturday for the Tigers.  Sanz made 14 starts for the Oneonta Tigers a year ago, posting a 3.27 ERA in 82.2 innings pitched, while recording 61 strikeouts.  Bobby Doran will get the start for the Valleycats.
