Scouting Lance Baxter

Left-handed pitcher Lance Baxter signed a free agent contract with the Tigers after going unselected in the 2010 MLB draft.  He posted a 4.81 ERA in 88.0 innings pitched this season as a senior at South Alabama and showed the versatility to handle both starting and relieving.

South Alabama pitching coach Scot Sealy says Baxter throws five pitches including a four-seam fastball, a two-seam fastball with good sink, a cutter, a breaking ball and a changeup.  He adds and subtracts velocity to his fastball, throwing it anywhere between 86 and 90 miles per hour.  Sealy also says Baxter has the ability to throw any pitch in any count.

Despite his lack of overwhelming raw stuff, Baxter could have some success in the low minors thanks to his ability to change speeds.

According to Mark Anderson of TigsTown.com, Baxter has been assigned to Connecticut.
