Scouting Matt Perry

Holy Cross third baseman Matt Perry was selected by the Tigers in the 41st round of the 2010 MLB draft.  Perry led Holy Cross this season with a .409 batting average and a .498 on-base percentage.

Holy Cross head coach Greg DiCenzo said Perry’s best tool is his bat.  While he is not a power hitter, Perry has a solid approach at the plate and has the ability to drive the ball to the outfield gaps.

“He works middle/away most often, but has made some significant strides in becoming a professional hitter who can turn on balls quite frequently,” DiCenzo said.

Defensively, Perry has limited range, but he is capable of playing third base, second base and either corner outfield position.  DiCenzo said he is particularly adept at fielding drag bunts from his third base position.

Perry does not have spectacular tools, but projects as an organizational player because of his excellent makeup.  DiCenzo said he is a smart player with a fantastic work ethic.

“(He) will make everyone around him a better baseball player and a better person,” DiCenzo said.

Once he signs, Perry will be assigned to either the Connecticut Tigers or the Gulf Coast League Tigers.
