Tigers in EST: Edwin Gomez

One of the more heralded Tigers prospects in extended spring training is Edwin Gomez, who joined the Tigers last season after being selected in the fourth round of the 2009 MLB draft.  Gomez is a cousin of former Major League infielder Alex Cintron and was the second player from Puerto Rico selected in last year’s draft.

After signing a professional contract, Gomez was assigned to the GCL Tigers.  He had a rough season in the Gulf Coast League, hitting only .190 in 170 plate appearances.  Although the numbers were not impressive, Gomez was only 18-years-old and scouts believe he has offensive potential.

His scouting report from PGcrosschecker.com says Gomez handles the bat head well and has solid power from both sides of the plate.  His best attribute is his speed, as he has been clocked running the 60 yard dash in 6.6 seconds.  Thanks to his size and athleticism, Gomez has drawn comparisons to Alex Rios.

Gomez played shortstop last season for the GCL Tigers, but was moved to the outfield in spring training.  It will be interesting to see if he is promoted to Connecticut or asked to repeat the Gulf Coast League in 2010.
