Tigers in EST: Jimmy Gulliver

Jimmy Gulliver joined the Tigers organization after being selected in the 20th round of the 2009 MLB draft.  The Allen Park, Mich. native has big league bloodlines as his father, Glenn, played for the Orioles in the early 1980s.

Gulliver showed good plate discipline during his college career at Eastern Michigan University and that trend continued in his professional debut with the Oneonta Tigers in 2009, as he drew a walk in nearly 11 percent of his plate appearances.  Unfortunately, not much else went right for Gulliver last season.  He struggled at the plate, hitting .196 with only three extra base hits in 148 at bats.

Gulliver also struggled on defense, committing 21 errors in 47 games at shortstop.  Glenn Gulliver told The News-Herald last July that defense was the strength of his son’s game, making Jimmy’s defensive struggles all the more surprising.  Perhaps his offensive struggles took such a mental toll that they affected his performance on defense.

Gulliver is currently in extended spring training.  He will likely be assigned to Connecticut in June, where he will look to improve in his second time around the New York-Penn League.
