Richard Zumaya, the younger brother of Tigers reliever Joel Zumaya, signed with the Tigers after being drafted in the 43rd round of the 2007 MLB draft.  He has spent the bulk of his three professional seasons with the Rookie Level Gulf Coast League Tigers, but he showed significant improvement in 2009, meaning he may finally be ready for a promotion to the New York-Penn League.

Zumaya’s 5.26 ERA in 2009 does not do justice to his performance, as he was a victim of an extremely high .420 batting average on balls in play.  He posted the best strikeout rate (10.9 SO/9) of his career and his walk rate (3.2 BB/9) improved for the third straight season.

The Tigers recognized Zumaya’s improved performance and gave him a brief promotion to the Lakeland Flying Tigers in late August to fill out a depleted roster.  In 6.1 innings with Lakeland, he posted a 7.11 ERA and a 3 to 6 strikeout to walk ratio.

Unlike his flame-throwing older brother, Zumaya has a below-average fastball that sits in the high 80s.
