Tigers in EST: Daniel Fields

The most prominent Tigers prospect in extended spring training is center fielder Daniel Fields.  Fields, son of former Detroit Tigers hitting coach Bruce Fields, was selected by the Tigers in the 6th round of the 2009 MLB draft.

Lauded for his raw power and athleticism, Fields dropped in the draft because of concerns about his signability and his desire to attend the University of Michigan.  Just before the Aug. 17 signing deadline, Fields signed with the Tigers, receiving an over-slot bonus of approximately $1.6 million.  According to pgcrosschecker, he received approximately the same signing bonus as Nationals draft pick Drew Storen, who was the 10th overall pick in the draft.

A shortstop in high school, Fields was moved to center field in spring training where, according to a Tigstown twitter post, he was playing minor league games for the short season squad, a good indication he will be assigned to the Connecticut Tigers in June.

Fields is ranked as the 9th best prospect in the Tigers organization by Baseball America.  BA also lists him as the best athlete and fastest baserunner in the system.
