Tigers in EST: Alexander Nuñez
Signed by the Tigers as a free agent, Alexander Nuñez made his professional debut in 2008 playing for the Tigers’ Dominican Summer League team, where he posted a .275 BA, a .369 OBP and a .357 SLG in 199 plate appearances.
In 2009, Nuñez was brought stateside to play for the GCL Tigers, where he significantly improved upon his numbers from the previous season, posting a .308 BA, .353 OBP and a .531 SLG. His OBP dropped a tick, but this is not a regression, as his 2008 OBP was likely inflated by the notoriously wild pitchers of the Dominican Summer League. That said, his plate discipline could certainly use to improve and there is a good chance it will considering Nuñez is only 19 years old.
The most encouraging aspect of Nuñez’s 2009 season was the increase in his power numbers. He collected 17 extra-base hits in 41 games and posted an isolated power of .224. This would seem to indicate that Nuñez is ready for a promotion, likely to the Connecticut Tigers in 2010. A good athlete with the ability to play multiple infield positions, Nuñez has spent most of his professional career as a second baseman.
